The Postfield and Sentence Bracket

Learn how longer comparative, prepositional, infinitive, and subordinate-clause complements can follow the closing verb bracket. Distinguish neutral middle-field order from useful and awkward extraposition.

Explanation

The sentence bracket and postfield

Multi-part verb forms create a sentence bracket. The finite element opens it and the second verb element closes it. The area after the closing element is the postfield (Nachfeld).

Common postfield elements are longer als/wie comparisons, subordinate clauses, zu infinitive clauses, and—especially in speech—heavy prepositional complements.

Mia hatsich sehrgefreutüber die Zusage.
Der Bericht istdeutlich längergewordenals erwartet.
Wir habenerst gesternerfahren, dass der Termin ausfällt.

Why use it?

The postfield can relieve an overloaded middle field and make the bracket easier to process. Short complements closely linked to the verb normally remain inside the bracket. Comparative groups and clauses sound especially natural after it.

Extraposing an ordinary prepositional group often sounds spoken or like an afterthought. In formal writing, use it only when it improves readability. A subordinate clause is separated by a comma; a simple comparative or prepositional group normally is not.

Remember: the postfield is a stylistic option, not a place for arbitrary short elements.

Rule-to-example map

The following German examples cover every structure tested in the exercises:
