Dative and Accusative Object Order
Master the neutral order of German dative and accusative objects. Choose the right pattern for nouns and pronouns and place unstressed pronouns close to the finite verb.
Explanation
Three core patterns
This lesson assumes that you already know dative and accusative forms; it focuses on **order**.

| one pronoun + one noun | pronoun before noun | Sie schickt **ihm die Bestätigung**. / Sie schickt **sie dem Kunden**. |
| two unstressed personal pronouns | accusative before dative | Sie schickt **sie ihm**. |
Unstressed personal and reflexive pronouns normally occur early in the middle field, close to the finite verb: **Heute schickt sie ihm die Bestätigung. Heute hat die Agentin sie ihm geschickt. Danach wäscht er sich die Hände.** Other adverbials do not change the basic object pattern. Contrastive stress can license another order, but this lesson practises neutral standard usage.

- **Zwei Nomen:** Die Assistentin erklärt **dem Kunden den Ablauf**.
- **Dativpronomen:** Die Assistentin erklärt **ihm den Ablauf**.
- **Akkusativpronomen:** Die Assistentin erklärt **ihn dem Kunden**.
- **Zwei Pronomen:** Die Assistentin erklärt **ihn ihm**.
- **Minimalpaar:** Sie gibt **der Kollegin den Schlüssel**. – Sie gibt **ihn der Kollegin**.
- **Bekannt vor neu:** Der Arzt empfiehlt **dem Patienten eine neue Therapie**.
- **Akkusativ vor Dativ bei Pronomen:** Bitte schicken Sie **es mir** heute.
- **Vorfeld:** **Den Schlüssel** gibt sie dem Hausmeister morgen.
