Last updated: July 11, 2026

Explanation

Unreal comparisons

Als ob/als wenn introduce a subordinate clause with the verb at the end: Er tut so, als ob er alles wüsste. Past: Sie sieht aus, als ob sie nicht geschlafen hätte.

Short als uses main-clause order: Er tut so, als wüsste er alles. Past: Sie sah aus, als hätte sie nicht geschlafen.

Unreal consequences

zu + adjective/adverb + als dass expresses a consequence blocked by excessive degree: Er ist zu müde, als dass er weiterarbeiten könnte. Past: Er war zu müde, als dass er hätte weiterarbeiten können.

beinahe/fast + past subjunctive II marks a consequence that almost happened: Fast hätte ich den Zug verpasst. Distinguish present/past and the different clause architectures.
