Master local and continuing relative clauses, was and wo(r)+preposition, generalizing wer/was constructions, and als for time, role, and function.

Explanation

The form depends on the antecedent type: place and direction, an indefinite pronoun or superlative, a whole proposition, or a generalized person/thing.

Choosing the form

With concrete nouns, preposition + der/die/das is often more precise than wo(r)-. Was and wo(r)- forms can refer to an indefinite, nominalized superlative, or the whole preceding proposition. In wer ... der, each case is selected independently by its verb; the demonstrative may be omitted when cases coincide. Als links past time expressions to clauses and also marks role/function outside relative clauses.
