Purpose and Substitute Infinitive Clauses
Distinguish um … zu from damit and ohne/anstatt … zu from ohne/anstatt dass by subject control, time reference, and register.
Explanation
Infinitive constructions are compact when the main and infinitive events share a controlling subject. Different subjects require a finite subordinate clause.

Decision path
`um ... zu` marks purpose, `ohne ... zu/ohne dass` an absent accompanying action or result, and `anstatt ... zu/anstatt dass` an unchosen alternative. Anteriority uses participle + `zu haben/zu sein`. `damit` is obligatory with a subject change and can be emphatic with the same subject. `anstelle (dessen), dass` is often more formal.
