Preposition Position and Case Variation

Master preposed, postposed, and circumposed patterns plus position-dependent case and meaning.

Last updated: July 11, 2026

Explanation

Most prepositions precede their phrase. zufolge, zuliebe, lang, halber are typically postposed; gegenüber, gemäß, nach allow both positions. With entlang, preposed + genitive (also dative, especially in speech) commonly describes location, while postposed + accusative marks movement.

Circumpositions surround the phrase: auf ... hin + acc, von ... an/ab/aus + dat, um ... herum + acc, über ... hinaus + acc, aus ... heraus + dat, um ... willen + gen.

Example map

The following German examples cover every rule tested in the exercises and the key contrasts.
