Verb-Bound Complements in the Middle Field
Recognise elements tightly bound to the verb and place them immediately before the closing verb bracket. Distinguish prepositional complements, predicatives, fixed verb–noun combinations, and directional complements from freer adverbials.
Explanation
Elements close to the verb
Some constituents form a particularly close unit with the verb. In neutral order they occur **late in the middle field**, directly before the final verb element or at the end when there is no bracket:
- Wir haben gestern lange **auf die Rückmeldung** gewartet.
- Wir haben gestern lange **darauf** gewartet.
- Nach der Nachtschicht ist Lea völlig **erschöpft** geworden.
- Das Team hat beim Empfang **Fotos** gemacht.
- Die Kinder sind nach dem Essen **nach draußen** gegangen.
This includes verb-governed prepositional complements and pronominal adverbs, predicative adjectives, fixed verb–noun combinations, and required direction or destination phrases. Freer expressions of time, reason, and manner normally precede them. Compare the articleless fixed combination **Klavier spielen** with the concrete object in **das Klavier kaufen**. The focus here is placement, not memorising preposition government.
