CEFR C1
Subjectless Impersonal Passive
Form subjectless passive clauses and control es, the first position, and agreement.
Last updated: July 11, 2026
Explanation
Form
Verbs without an accusative object may form an impersonal passive: Heute wird getanzt. Ihm wurde geholfen. The finite verb is always third-person singular; dative and prepositional complements remain.
Use placeholder es when nothing else occupies the first position: Es wurde diskutiert. Omit it after another first-position element and in subordinate clauses. The meaning often corresponds to active man. Reflexive colloquial commands retain sich.
