Information Structure: Theme and Rheme
Manage given and new information in German sentences. Use definiteness, the middle field, and fronting to create cohesion and marked focus.
Explanation
Given before new
In neutral order, **given or identifiable information** tends to occur earlier, while **new or important information** tends to occur farther right, often near the closing verb bracket. Definite phrases often refer back; indefinite phrases often introduce a referent. This is a context-sensitive tendency, not a mechanical article rule.
The prefield can create temporal, spatial, or thematic links: **Am nächsten Morgen** begann die Sitzung. **Den Bericht** legte die Redaktion anschließend ins Archiv. Fronting another constituent can mark contrast: **Gründlich** geprüft wurde nur der erste Antrag. Such marked orders require an appropriate discourse context. Unstressed reflexive pronouns, accusative **es**, isolated **nicht**, and most focus particles normally cannot stand alone in the prefield.

- **Passiv zur Themenkontinuität:** Der Antrag lag seit Montag vor. **Er wurde gestern genehmigt.**
- **Es-Vorfeld:** **Es** sind mehrere Beschwerden eingegangen.
- **Linksversetzung:** **Der neue Zeitplan**, der überzeugt bisher niemanden.
