Sentence Connections and Verb Position
Distinguish subordinate-clause connectors, position-1 conjunctive adverbs, and position-0 coordinating conjunctions. Place the finite verb and subject correctly across connected clauses.
Explanation
Three patterns for connecting clauses
1. Subordinate-clause connector
After **weil, obwohl, während, sobald, dass**, a subordinate clause follows. The subject normally comes directly after the connector; the finite verb stands at the end.
- Wir bleiben noch, **weil die Sitzung länger dauert**.
- Sie ging spazieren, **obwohl es stark geregnet hatte**.
With complex verb groups, the non-finite part stands immediately before the finite verb: *..., weil er früher **hätte gehen müssen***.
2. Conjunctive adverb in position 1
**deshalb, trotzdem, danach, sonst, außerdem** belong to the second main clause and occupy position 1. The finite verb follows in position 2, usually before the subject.
- Der Zug fällt aus; **deshalb nehmen wir** den Bus.
- Es war spät. **Trotzdem blieb sie** noch.
If the adverb appears later, the finite verb remains in position 2: *Wir nehmen deshalb den Bus.* Pronouns precede a later adverb: *Ich erkläre es dir trotzdem.*
3. Coordinating conjunction in position 0
**und, oder, aber, denn, sondern** connect equal main clauses. They stand outside the second clause in position 0 and do not trigger inversion.
- Ich rufe an, **denn ich brauche** deine Hilfe.
- Er arbeitet nicht im Büro, **sondern er bleibt** heute zu Hause.
Shared elements can often be omitted: *Sie öffnete die Datei und prüfte die Zahlen.*
Quick check
Ask what begins after the connector: a subordinate clause (verb at the end), a main clause beginning with an adverb (verb immediately after it), or a main clause after position 0 (normal main-clause order).

- **Koordination:** Die Sitzung endet, **aber** wir arbeiten weiter.
- **Hauptsatzadverb:** Die Sitzung endet; **trotzdem arbeiten** wir weiter.
- **Nebensatz:** Wir arbeiten weiter, **obwohl die Sitzung endet**.
- **Grund: denn:** Wir bleiben, **denn die Aufgabe ist noch nicht fertig**.
- **Grund: deshalb:** Die Aufgabe ist noch nicht fertig; **deshalb bleiben** wir.
- **Grund: weil:** Wir bleiben, **weil die Aufgabe noch nicht fertig ist**.
- **Minimaltrias:** Es regnet, **aber wir gehen**. – Es regnet; **trotzdem gehen wir**. – Wir gehen, **obwohl es regnet**.
- **Inversion:** Danach **prüft das Team** die Ergebnisse.
- **Fehlerkontrast:** Richtig: **weil er keine Zeit hat**; nicht: *weil er hat keine Zeit*.

- Join the two statements using the given connector. Write one complete German sentence and apply the correct pattern in the second clause. (11)
