Advanced Prepositional Complements and Pronominal Adverbs

Last updated: July 11, 2026

Form questions and references with wo(r)-, da(r)-, and preposition + person, and link infinitive/dass clauses correctly.

Explanation

For things use wo(r)+preposition and da(r)+preposition; insert r before a vowel. For people use preposition + wen/wem and a personal pronoun. da(r)- can refer to a whole statement and often introduces dass/infinitive complements: darauf, dass ...; davor, zu .... It tends to stand late, before the second verb part.

Examples

  • Thing: Worauf wartest du? – Ich warte auf den Zug. Darauf warte ich auch.
  • Person: Auf wen wartest du? – Ich warte auf Lea. Auf sie warte ich schon lange.
  • Before a vowel: Woran denkst du? – Ich denke daran.
  • Proposition: Der Termin fällt aus. Darüber ärgere ich mich.
  • dass-clause: Wir verlassen uns darauf, dass du pünktlich kommst.
  • Infinitive clause: Sie hat Angst davor, allein zu sprechen.
  • Position before verb part 2: Er hat sich darauf nicht verlassen können.
