Alternatives to the werden Passive

Last updated: July 11, 2026

Replace the werden passive with sich lassen, sein + zu + infinitive, and suitable adjectives while respecting modality, register, and meaning limits.

Explanation

Three alternatives

sich lassen + infinitive usually expresses possibility: Der Fehler lässt sich beheben = can be fixed. No agent is named.

sein + zu + infinitive can mean possibility, necessity, or an instruction; context decides.

Adjectives in -bar, -abel, -lich describe a property, but are not freely interchangeable: löslich is used for substances, lösbar for problems. Not every -bar adjective has passive meaning. Use an alternative only when it preserves the intended meaning.

For concrete, completed actions, the werden passive is often more natural.
