Position and Scope of nicht
Place nicht accurately in whole-sentence and constituent negation. Identify which complements precede or follow it and how its position changes the contrast.
Explanation
What does **nicht** negate?
The position of **nicht** signals whether the whole statement or one particular constituent is negated.
1. Sentence negation: the whole statement is negative
In neutral sentence negation, **nicht** tends to appear far to the right, but before elements closely tied to the predicate.
**Usually before nicht:** pronouns; dative and accusative objects; time and reason phrases.
- *Ich habe **es nicht** verstanden.*
- *Sie hat **dem Kunden die Datei nicht** geschickt.*
- *Wir konnten **gestern wegen des Sturms nicht** starten.*
**Usually after nicht:** manner; place or direction; fixed verb complements; a non-finite verb part at the end.
- *Er arbeitet **nicht sorgfältig**.*
- *Sie fährt **nicht nach Köln**.*
- *Ich nehme **nicht an der Sitzung teil**.*
- *Wir sind **nicht angekommen**.*
These groups are a useful guide, not a rigid mathematical formula. Context and stress can motivate a different position.
2. Constituent negation: one element is contrasted
To negate only one constituent, place **nicht directly before it**. A phrase with **sondern** makes the contrast explicit.
- **Nicht Lara** hat angerufen, sondern Mehmet. (Who?)
- Lara hat **nicht gestern** angerufen, sondern heute. (When?)
- Lara hat gestern **nicht im Büro** angerufen, sondern von zu Hause. (Where?)
Compare:
- *Lara hat den Bericht nicht gelesen.* → The whole statement is negative.
- *Lara hat nicht den Bericht gelesen, sondern die E-Mail.* → The object is contrasted.
Check
First ask whether the entire action or only one element is negative. For sentence negation, arrange the clause elements; for constituent negation, put **nicht** immediately before the focus.
