Functions
Counterfactual wishes use subjunctive II, usually with **doch, bloß**, or **nur**: **Wenn er doch käme! / Käme er doch!** Past regret uses past subjunctive II: **Wenn ich nur früher gegangen wäre! / Wäre ich nur früher gegangen!**
A counterfactual condition links a premise and result: **Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich helfen.** Past: **Wenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte, hätte ich geholfen.** Without **wenn**, the verb comes first: **Hätte ich Zeit gehabt, hätte ich geholfen.**
**Sonst** introduces the unrealized consequence of a real fact: **Ich hatte Hilfe. Sonst hätte ich aufgegeben.** **Ohne/mit** can condense the condition.
**Selbst wenn / auch wenn** introduce a counterfactual concession: the result remains unchanged despite the assumed condition. Keep present and past time reference logically consistent.
