Auch and Focus Particles
Distinguish sentence-wide auch from focusing auch and place German focus particles immediately before the constituent they highlight.
Explanation
Two uses of **auch**
**Auch** can add an entire proposition or focus one constituent.
Sentence-wide **auch**
Sentence-wide **auch** means that the whole statement is additionally true. In the middle field it occupies a position similar to **nicht**, normally before manner/place adverbials or a complement closely linked to the verb:
- **Lina hat gestern auch konzentriert im Büro gearbeitet.**
- **Ich kann mich heute auch nicht um die Bestellung kümmern.**
- **Wir hören abends auch Musik.**
It cannot occupy the first position alone: **Auch hat Lina gearbeitet** is incorrect.
Focusing **auch**
When **auch** adds only one constituent, it stands **immediately before that focus**, which receives spoken stress:
- **Auch Lina** kommt. — Not only other people.
- Lina besucht **auch uns**. — Not only other people.
- Lina kommt **auch morgen**. — Not only today.
- Lina fährt **auch nach Köln**. — Not only Bonn.
Changing the position changes scope and meaning.
Other focus particles
Other particles also directly precede their focus:

| **mindestens** | lower limit | Wir brauchen **mindestens drei Tage**. |
The particle and focus form one unit. The **whole unit** may be fronted (**Auch morgen** findet der Kurs statt), but the particle cannot stand there alone.
Scope test
Ask “not only who, whom, when, where, or what?” The answer identifies the focus. Sentence-wide **auch** does not contrast one constituent; it adds the whole proposition.
