Paired Connectors

Explanation
Four paired connectors
Paired connectors have two parts and link **parallel elements**: two nouns, adjectives, phrases, or clauses.

Keep the structure parallel
Use the same grammatical form after both parts: **sowohl im Büro als auch zu Hause**, **weder teuer noch kompliziert**, **entweder heute kommen oder morgen anrufen**.
Short parallel elements normally have no comma between them. When complete main clauses are joined, a comma is required before **sondern**. Keep the finite verb in its normal position and remember that **auch** belongs to the second half of *nicht nur … sondern auch*.

With **je … desto/umso**, the verb is final in the je-clause and occupies position 2 in the desto/umso main clause. With **nicht nur … sondern auch**, the second subject and verb stand between *sondern* and *auch*. Agreement with coordinated subjects follows number and proximity.
