Last updated:
Learn how to use werden + infinitive for future events and assumptions. Distinguish formal Futur I from the present tense for fixed plans, and use wohl, vielleicht, and wahrscheinlich appropriately.
Explanation
Futur I: future events and assumptions
The German Futur I uses a conjugated form of werden plus the infinitive of the main verb.
Mira wird morgen länger arbeiten.
Formation
| Person | werden | Example |
|---|
| ich | werde | Ich werde anrufen. |
| du | wirst | Du wirst anrufen. |
| er/sie/es/man | wird | Er wird anrufen. |
| wir | werden | Wir werden anrufen. |
| ihr | werdet | Ihr werdet anrufen. |
| sie/Sie | werden | Sie werden anrufen. |
In a main clause, werden is in position 2 and the infinitive is at the end:
Nächste Woche werden wir das Ergebnis bekommen.
A time expression may come first, but werden remains in position 2:
Im Herbst wird die Firma eine neue Filiale eröffnen.
Two key uses
1. Future events
Futur I announces a future event. It often sounds formal, official, or emphatic.
Die Bibliothek wird am Montag wieder öffnen.
2. Assumptions
Futur I can express an assumption about the present or future. Words such as wohl, vielleicht, and wahrscheinlich highlight uncertainty.
Jonas wird wohl noch im Zug sein. Es wird wahrscheinlich später regnen.
Futur I or present tense?
In everyday German, a fixed and especially near-term plan is often expressed in the present tense with a time expression:
Heute Abend treffe ich meine Schwester.
Futur I suits formal announcements, predictions, or a strongly emphasized future:
Der Zug wird heute zehn Minuten später abfahren.
Both forms can refer to the future. Context and style matter: the present tense usually sounds more natural for fixed plans, while Futur I often sounds more formal or uncertain.
The verbal bracket
The two verb parts form a bracket:
| First field | werden | Middle field | Infinitive |
|---|
| Wir | werden | den Vertrag morgen | unterschreiben. |
| Vielleicht | wird | Lara später | kommen. |
Remember: conjugated werden is in position 2, while the infinitive stays at the end.
