Advanced German Comma Rules

Use commas with subordinate and relative clauses, coordinated clauses, lists, appositions, and infinitive groups, including meaning-changing ambiguity.

Last updated: July 11, 2026

Explanation

Commas mark syntactic boundaries and can prevent ambiguity. The key is whether full clauses, subordinate clauses, or coordinate constituents are being linked.

Application

Subordinate clauses and appositions are delimited; an inserted unit needs two commas. Aber, sondern, doch, and denn take a preceding comma, while final und/oder/sowie in a list do not. Infinitive commas are obligatory with um/ohne/anstatt, a correlate, or a governing noun; otherwise they may be optional but useful for clarity.
