Explanation
Polite requests and questions with Konjunktiv II
German uses Konjunktiv II to make a request or question sound more tentative and polite than the indicative:
- Kannst du mir helfen? → Könntest du mir helfen?
- Bringen Sie mir bitte die Rechnung. → Würden Sie mir bitte die Rechnung bringen?
Key forms
| Person | haben | sein | können | werden |

Use könnte(n) for polite requests or questions about possibility:
- Könnten Sie das bitte wiederholen?
- Könnte ich hier bezahlen?
Use hätte(n) to ask politely about availability or express a wish:
- Hätten Sie morgen Zeit?
- Ich hätte gern einen Tee.
Use wäre(n) to ask whether an option is suitable or to evaluate it:
- Wäre Freitag möglich?
- Das wäre sehr nett.
Most other verbs use würde + infinitive:
- Würdest du das Fenster schließen?
- Würden Sie mir den Weg zeigen?
Word order
In statements and wh-questions, the conjugated form is in position 2 and the infinitive is at the end:
- Ich würde gern später anrufen.
- Wann würden Sie gern kommen?
In yes/no questions, the conjugated form is in position 1:
- Könnten Sie mir kurz helfen?
- Würdest du die Tür schließen?
Bitte can appear in the middle field. Formal Sie is capitalised.
