The Passive Voice in the Present and Preterite

Last updated: July 10, 2026

Learn how German describes actions in the passive when the agent is unknown or unimportant. Practise werden + past participle in the present and preterite and use the correct word order in statements and questions.

Explanation

What does the passive voice express?

The German passive voice used here is called Vorgangspassiv: it focuses on an action or process. The person doing it is often unknown, unimportant, or clear from context.

  • Active: Die Technikerin repariert den Aufzug. (The technician repairs the lift.)
  • Passive: Der Aufzug wird repariert. (The lift is being repaired.)

When the agent matters, add it with von + dative:

  • Der Aufzug wird von der Technikerin repariert.

Formation: werden + past participle

The conjugated auxiliary werden occupies the normal verb position. The past participle goes at the end.

Present tense

PersonwerdenExample
ichwerdeIch werde informiert.
duwirstDu wirst informiert.
er/sie/eswirdSie wird informiert.
wirwerdenWir werden informiert.
ihrwerdetIhr werdet informiert.
sie/SiewerdenSie werden informiert.

Preterite

PersonwerdenExample
ichwurdeIch wurde informiert.
duwurdestDu wurdest informiert.
er/sie/eswurdeEr wurde informiert.
wirwurdenWir wurden informiert.
ihrwurdetIhr wurdet informiert.
sie/SiewurdenSie wurden informiert.

Word order

In statements and wh-questions, the conjugated form of werden is in position 2. The participle is at the end:

  • Die Bestellung wird heute verschickt.
  • Wann wird die Bestellung verschickt?

In a yes/no question, werden is in position 1:

  • Wird die Bestellung heute verschickt?

The pattern is the same in the preterite:

  • Die Straße wurde gestern gesperrt.
  • Warum wurde die Straße gesperrt?

Active or passive?

In the active voice, the subject performs the action: Der Hausmeister öffnet die Tür. In the passive, something happens to the subject: Die Tür wird geöffnet.

Note that a form of werden alone is not automatically passive. In Mira wurde Ärztin, wurde means “became”; there is no past participle. In Mira wurde eingeladen, wurde + eingeladen form the passive.

Choosing the correct participle

The passive needs the full verb's past participle:

  • reparieren → repariert
  • öffnen → geöffnet
  • abholen → abgeholt
  • unterschreiben → unterschrieben
  • verkaufen → verkauft

Remember: werden carries person and tense; the participle carries the meaning of the action.
