Learn the forms of dies- and welch- and the difference between welch- and was für ein. Practise selection questions, questions about qualities, and the correct endings in the nominative, accusative, and dative.

Explanation

dies-, welch-, and was für ein

Use dies- to point to a specific person or thing: dieser Mantel, diese Tasche, dieses Zimmer, diese Schuhe.

Use welch- to ask someone to choose from known options: Welchen Mantel meinst du - den grauen oder den schwarzen?

Use was für ein to ask about type, quality, or category: Was für einen Mantel trägt er? - Einen langen Wintermantel.

Endings of dies- and welch-

dies- and welch- follow the strong ending pattern -er, -e, -es, -en, -em. The table shows the forms by case, gender, and number.

was für ein declines like the indefinite article. The words was für do not change:

  • Was für eine Karte brauchen Sie? - Eine Tageskarte.
  • Mit was für einem Zug fahrt ihr? - Mit einem Regionalzug.
  • Was für Schuhe trägt sie? - Bequeme Sportschuhe.

Selection or quality?

First ask whether the options are already known or visible.

  • known selection: welch- - Welche Tür ist der Ausgang, die linke oder die rechte?
  • open question about type or quality: was für ein - Was für eine Wohnung suchst du?
  • pointing to something specific: dies- - Diese Wohnung gefällt mir.

After a preposition, the preposition determines the case: mit welchem, in welchem, an welchen. Then check gender and number.
