Present Tense: Extra -e-
Learn why verbs such as arbeiten, reden, öffnen and zeichnen need an extra -e- in some present-tense forms.
Explanation
The extra -e- in the present tense
Regular verbs normally place **-st** and **-t** directly after the stem. Some combinations are difficult to pronounce, so German inserts an extra **-e-** before the ending.
Stems ending in -t or -d
After **-t** or **-d**, the forms for **du**, **er/sie/es** and **ihr** use an extra **-e-**:

- **Du arbeitest heute zu Hause.**
- **Mia redet mit ihrer Freundin.**
- **Ihr wartet vor dem Kino.**
Consonant + m or n
Some stems ending in **consonant + m/n** also need this **-e-**:
- **Du öffnest das Fenster.**
- **Der Kurs endet um zwölf Uhr.**
- **Ihr zeichnet ein Haus.**
Compare **Du lernst Deutsch** with **du öffnest die Tür**. In **lernen**, a vowel comes before n; in **öffnen**, another consonant comes before n.
Remember: **arbeitest, arbeitet; öffnest, öffnet**. The extra **e** makes the form easier to pronounce.
