Present Tense: S-sounds and Verbs in -eln
Learn the du form after s-sounds and the ich form of common verbs ending in -eln.
Explanation
Two common spelling patterns
This lesson covers two small patterns in regular verbs.
1. The du form after an s-sound
When the stem ends in **-s, -ss, -ß** or **-z**, the **du** form does not add another s. The ending is simply **-t**:

- **Du heißt Lara.**
- **Du reist morgen nach Wien.**
- **Du tanzt sehr gern.**
Compare **du lernst** with **du tanzt**. After the z in **tanz-**, there is no extra s.
2. The ich form of verbs ending in -eln
With many verbs ending in **-eln**, the **ich** form drops the e before l:
- **sammeln → Ich sammle Postkarten.**
- **klingeln → Ich klingle bei Anna.**
- **wechseln → Ich wechsle den Zug.**
Other persons keep the stem: **du sammelst**, **Mia sammelt**, **wir sammeln**.
Remember: **du heißt / du tanzt**, but **ich sammle / ich wechsle**.
