Explanation
Two common spelling patterns
This lesson covers two small patterns in regular verbs.
1. The du form after an s-sound
When the stem ends in -s, -ss, -ß or -z, the du form does not add another s. The ending is simply -t:

- Du heißt Lara.
- Du reist morgen nach Wien.
- Du tanzt sehr gern.
Compare du lernst with du tanzt. After the z in tanz-, there is no extra s.
2. The ich form of verbs ending in -eln
With many verbs ending in -eln, the ich form drops the e before l:
- sammeln → Ich sammle Postkarten.
- klingeln → Ich klingle bei Anna.
- wechseln → Ich wechsle den Zug.
Other persons keep the stem: du sammelst, Mia sammelt, wir sammeln.
Remember: du heißt / du tanzt, but ich sammle / ich wechsle.
