Learn to negate German statements with nicht or kein-. Practise the position of nicht and choose the correct form of kein- before nouns.
Explanation
Two ways to negate
German uses nicht to negate an action, quality, phrase, or whole statement. Kein- negates a noun that would have an indefinite article or no article.
- Lea arbeitet heute. → Lea arbeitet heute nicht.
- Wir haben einen Balkon. → Wir haben keinen Balkon.
- Im Kühlschrank ist Milch. → Im Kühlschrank ist keine Milch.
When do we use kein-?
Use kein- directly before a noun if the positive sentence has ein/eine or no article:

Kein- takes the same endings as ein-. This A1 lesson focuses mainly on nominative and accusative forms.
When do we use nicht?
Use nicht when you are not negating an indefinite noun:
- an action: Ich schwimme nicht.
- a quality: Der Kaffee ist nicht heiß.
- a phrase: Wir treffen uns nicht am Montag.
- a noun with a definite or possessive article: Ich nehme nicht den Bus. Das ist nicht mein Mantel.
Where does nicht go?
When the whole statement is negated, nicht goes as far toward the end as possible:
- Der Laden öffnet heute nicht.
- Wir kennen den Nachbarn nicht.
With a verbal bracket, nicht comes before the final element — an infinitive or separable prefix:
- Mia kann morgen nicht kommen.
- Der Zug fährt heute nicht ab.
To negate only one phrase, put nicht directly before it:
- Wir fahren nicht nach Köln, sondern nach Bonn.
- Er arbeitet nicht am Freitag, sondern am Samstag.
Quick decision
- Are you negating a noun with ein/eine or no article? → kein-
- Are you negating an action, quality, or specific phrase? → nicht
- Check gender, number, and case for kein-.
- Check the verbal bracket and sentence ending for nicht.
