## Rule-to-example map

| haben + past participle             | Er sagt, er habe den Brief geschrieben.                       |
| sein + past participle              | Sie erklärt, sie sei früh gekommen.                           |
| sein/haben as lexical verbs         | Er sagt, er sei müde gewesen und habe Zeit gehabt.            |
| identical plural → K II             | Sie sagten, sie hätten lange gewartet.                        |
| modal double infinitive             | Er sagt, er habe früher gehen müssen.                         |
| plural modal substitute             | Sie erklärten, sie hätten sich einigen können.                |
| past passive                        | Die Polizei berichtet, die Tür sei geöffnet worden.           |
| plural passive substitute           | Sie sagten, sie seien gefragt worden.                         |
| present reporting verb              | Er sagt, er sei gestern angekommen.                           |
| past reporting verb                 | Er sagte, er sei gestern angekommen.                          |
| direct to indirect                  | „Ich habe bezahlt.“ → Sie sagt, sie habe bezahlt.             |
| indirect to direct                  | Er sagte, er sei müde gewesen. → Er sagte: „Ich war müde.“    |
| past independent of reporting tense | Er sagt / sagte / hat gesagt, er habe den Schlüssel verloren. |
