Form subjectless passive clauses and control es, the first position, and agreement.

Last updated: July 11, 2026

## Form

Verbs without an accusative object may form an impersonal passive: **Heute wird getanzt. Ihm wurde geholfen.** The finite verb is always third-person singular; dative and prepositional complements remain.

Use placeholder **es** when nothing else occupies the first position: **Es wurde diskutiert.** Omit it after another first-position element and in subordinate clauses. The meaning often corresponds to active **man**. Reflexive colloquial commands retain **sich**.
