Distinguish reason and counter-reason across neutral, spoken, and elevated connectors.

Last updated: July 11, 2026

## Meaning and register

**Weil** gives the direct reason, usually after the main clause, and answers _why?_; **da** usually presents a known reason first. **Zumal** adds an important reason and may stand as a contextual follow-up. **Obwohl** is neutral; **obgleich, obschon, wenngleich** are more formal, while **auch wenn** is often conditional-concessive. Spoken **wobei** adds a limiting counterpoint/new argument and cannot precede its host clause. **Ungeachtet dessen, dass** is elevated. The finite verb is final.
