Distinguish wegen, aufgrund, aus, vor, dank, angesichts, anlässlich, and mangels by meaning, case, and register.

Last updated: July 11, 2026

**wegen + genitive** gives a neutral cause; formal **aufgrund + genitive** motivates a decision. **aus + dative** marks a controlled motive, while **vor + dative** marks an involuntary emotional reaction. **dank + genitive/dative** normally introduces a positive cause, **angesichts** a situation faced, **anlässlich** an occasion, and **mangels** a missing prerequisite. The latter forms are mainly formal and written.

## Example map

The following German examples cover every rule tested in the exercises and the key contrasts.
